Four site skinfold
Four Sites are commonly used with skin fold calipers. The right hand side of the body is generally used but it has been found that either side may be used.
Biceps
In a plain along the arm over the front of the bicep muscle, mid way between the elbow and shoulder joints.
Triceps
A vertical fold on the back of the upper arm over the tricep muscle.
Subscapular
A diagonal fold about 1 - 2 cm below the scapular (shoulder blade), with the line drawn from the shoulder through the apex of the scapular.
Supra iliac
A diagonal fold 2 - 3 cm above and inwards from the iliac crest (hip bone).
The total millimeter score of the four sites is added up to provide a total score, which is then looked up on a table.
Below is a short video on how to find the four sites for skinfold. A student version using a pen which is OK for this video hence its use. Also take one reading within the first three seconds, multiple and long readings on one site will cause compression of the fat reducing the score.
